DEFENDING
club champion Donald Standaloft led the way in the first qualifying
round of this year’s title event with a two-over-par 70 at Kingarth
last Saturday.
In a day
of no real surprises four of the club’s leading players – Standaloft
70, Gordon Pettigrew 71, Duncan Speirs 71, and David Cameron 72 – all
returned scores that should see them coast into the match-play stages
in tomorrow’s second qualifier.
Others challenging
for a place in the top eight are David Bryden 77, George Cuthbertson
78, Bobby Speirs 79, with John Kernaghan, Gordon Little, and Duncan
Keith all on 81. Keith produced the best net score of the day with
an excellent 57 playing off 24. Jim McKirdy could also come into the
reckoning despite a disappointing 82. The competition scratch score
was 64.
The Texas
scramble mixed competition for the Kerrytonlia Cup takes place tonight
(Friday) when competitors should be at the clubhouse at 6.30pm.
PORT Bannatyne’s
David Bodys (10) won the Kingarth stage of the M & M Trophy last Wednesday
when he edged out Peter Crawford (6) of Rothesay with a better inward
half after both players finished on 62. Gordon McClean of Rothesay
had the best scratch score of the day with an excellent two-under-par
66 for net 63 to finish in third place. Other leading scorers, all on
64, were Tommy Duncan (6) Rothesay, David Greer (12) Port Bannatyne,
Graham Dunn (6) Port Bannatyne, and Graham Fisher (6) Rothesay.
