IT WAS
the turn of the low men to hit the heights on Saturday as the Winter
League at Kingarth continued to produce some outstanding results. Best
gross score of the day came from scratch man Graham Bolton, making his
first appearance in the current competition, when he finished in four-under-par
64 for 40 stableford points. Birdies at the third and ninth holes took
him out in 32 and, despite a double-bogey six at the fourteenth, completed
the back nine in the same total thanks to sub-par scores at the eleventh,
thirteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth. He had eight threes and a two
in his round. Two-handicapper Donald Standaloft also enjoyed a par-beating
performance with a remarkable back nine of just 30 shots. Having reached
the turn in 35 with one dropped shot at the sixth, Donald the plumber
burst into full flow with five successive threes from the twelfth to
finish on 65 for 41 points. Despite these heroics it was 21-handicapper
John Bunyan who took top honours for the day with a welcome return of
form. A solid inward half of 22 points, with a run of one over fours
for eight holes, set him up for victory on 43 points. Duncan Speirs
(6) and Bobby Speirs (12) were also among the leaders with 40 points.
The competition, sponsored by Stephen Thomas Financial Services, continues
tomorrow (Saturday) with the usual ballot at the clubhouse at 8.30am.
All members are welcome to take part.
