GORDON PETTIGREW
was the toast of Kingarth on Saturday night as he celebrated his fifth
club championship success at the annual prizegiving dinner at St Blane’s
Hotel. There were cheers all round for the popular six-handicapper as
he lifted the top trophy after a gap of 17 years since his last victory
in the title event. And as he rolled back the years in style this season
he also won the prestigious Robertson Medal and the McDougall Cup. There
was always going to be transport difficulties for prolific winner John
Kernaghan who won FIVE trophies but this was solved by jokers Douglas
Lyle and Bobby Speirs who produced a wheelbarrow to solve the problem!
The other
major success was enjoyed by Leonard Ferguson in the “Wee Championship”
to win the Cuthbertson Cup.
The ladies
season was dominated by Phyllis McKirdy and Elizabeth Speirs who won
a total of six individual trophies then, unsurprisingly, formed a winning
partnership to add the Gordon Rosebowl. Phyllis capped a triumphant
year by winning the ladies championship with a final victory over her
sister and former champion Marion MacDonald.
Club captain
Ian McDougall who along with his wife Mary presented the awards, paid
special tribute to hon. secretary Frazer Robertson who had organised
the successful event.
