DEFENDING champions Rothesay will battle it out with Bute for possession of the McMillan Quaich in the final match of the island's seniors golf league at Kingarth on Tuesday, June 6.

Victory for either club will give them the trophy and in the event of a draw the title will go to Bute.

Port Bannatyne's chances ended when they were held to a halved match at home by Bute.

KINGARTH golfers were singing the praises of the British Grenadier on Saturday as Bandsman Chris Spencer marched to an emphatic win in the May medal.

The 26-handicapper, back on the island on leave from the famous regiment, enjoyed his best-ever competitive round with a net 57 to take top spot in second class. It was the first time this season that the 60 barrier had been beaten. Spencer, who had birdies at the fifth and thirteenth, was six shots clear of second-placed John Bunyan (22) on net 63. John Kernaghan (14) and Ian McDougall (17) shared third place with 69.

The first class was led by David Cameron (8) on net 65 three clear of Gordon Pettigrew (7) on 68 with Bobby Speirs (12) and David Bryden (9) both on 69. The competition scratch score was 67.

Jim McKirdy defends the McAlister Tankard tomorrow (Saturday) in the annual bogey competition with the usual ballot at 8.30am.

On Sunday Kingarth hosts the second round of the M & M Trophy tournament with tee-off from 7.30am until 2.30pm.
