PORT BANNATYNE
were celebrating yet again last week after achieving a third title
win in the island’s Seniors Golf League when they grabbed a decisive
away point at Rothesay. It was the club’s second team trophy success
within a few days following their historic victory in the Firth of Clyde
five-man event at the same course.
In the Seniors
League the new champions were pushed all the way by a spirited performance
from Rothesay but the issue was finally settled by Port’s Tommy Wilkinson
and Walter MacLean as they defeated Andy Dunn and Russell Phillips by
2 and 1 in the last game. The 2-2 draw left The Port one point clear
at the top of the table to lift the McMillan Quaich with defending champions
Bute in second place. The other victors for The Port were Iain MacLeod
and John Preston with a last green success over Norman Lamond and Donald
Craig as Preston maintained his 100% record with four league wins.
Gordon Merritt and Balbir Kapoor enjoyed a day of low scoring, including
a run of eight under fours over 10 holes, as they gave Rothesay a lift
with a 2 and 1 victory against Hector Whitelaw and Andy Stevenson. The
other home win came from Lennie Moffat and Brian McKillop who dispatched
Jim Gordon and Andy Williamson by 6 and 5.
