DAVID CAMERON
was the toast of Kingarth at the weekend as he celebrated a return to
top form with a double. The seven-handicapper beat par on successive
days with gross scores of 67 and 66.
The first
cause for cheers came on Saturday when he lifted the McAlister Tankard
after finishing eight up in the annual bogey competition. Birdies at
the seventh and eighteenth helped him to a one-under-par 67 with a solitary
blemish when he took a five at the fourth. Cameron continued on his
winning way next day in the second round of the island's open M&M Trophy
event, also at Kingarth, when he went one better with a four-birdies
round of 66 to earn the scratch prize. He was five shots ahead of second-placed
Alistair Murray of Rothesay who had 71.
The McAlister
Tankard competition produced a barrage of birdies on the Saturday. In
addition to Cameron's clutch Donald Standaloft (3) had a rollercoaster
round with four birdies and an eagle which were wiped out by six bogeys
to leave him on level par 68 and a share of third place with John Bunyan
(20) on two up. John Kernaghan (14) was also part of the sub-par blitz
as he contributed four birdies in a splendid gross round of 73 to finish
runner-up on five up. The competition scratch score was 64.
The Bute
members are back on the trail of silverware tomorrow (Saturday) when
they will battle it out for the Kingarth Trophy, gifted last year by
the club patron, the Honourable Lord Kingarth. Arthur Hunter, the first
winner, is defending in this stableford event. The usual ballot takes
place at 8.30am at the clubhouse.
