EVEN the
heroics of vice-captain Hugh Charker was not enough to save Rothesay
from a 3 ˝ - 2˝ defeat at Kingarth last Saturday in the annual social
match with Bute. The nine-handicapper equalled the course record with
an outward half of 30 as he and partner Henry Tait did a demolition
job on his Bute counterpart, John Bunyan, and David Bryden. The Rothesay
pairing won by 6 and 4 thanks mainly to Charker’s five birdies within
eight holes plus another two for good measure from Tait.
Rothesay’s
other victorious partnership was Steve Campbell and Keir Byars with
a 4 and 3 success over Ian McDougall and George Cuthbertson. However
the match honours went to the home team led by club champion Gordon
Pettigrew and Frazer Robinson who enjoyed an excellent 2 and 1 victory
over Kingarth Open winner Steve MacDonald and Jimmy Burke. Pettigrew
finished on two-under-par 66. The other Bute winners were John Kernaghan
and Bobby Speirs who beat Kenny Thomson and Ian McMurchie on the last
green and Jim McKirdy and Leonard Ferguson with a 5 and 3 success over
Gordon Shaw and Stuart Robertson. Bute’s Colin Gray and John Girvan
halved their match with Jim Milliken and Peter McKay. There was widespread
praise from both teams for the condition of the Kingarth course despite
the overnight deluge which created a few additional “water features”
and Bute captain Ian McDougall paid special tribute to the efforts of
greenkeepers Joe McCabe and Jim Speirs.
JOHN KERNAGHAN
is the man to catch when the second round of the Sir Harry Hope Cup
takes place at Kingarth tomorrow (Saturday). The 13-handicapper scored
net 62 in the first round of the competition in which participants play
over three rounds with the best 18-hole score counting. The usual ballot
takes place at the clubhouse at 8.30am.
