ANY challenge to John Kernaghan at the top of Kingarth's Winter League evaporated in a blink of sunshine on Saturday as the 10-handicapper held his lead to lift the McArthur Cup for a second time. Kernaghan. who last won the title in 2004 with, coincidentally, the same 315 stableford points' tally, finished nine points clear of his neares challenger. The league, sponsored by Stephen Thomas Financial Services, has been dogged by dismal weather with a proportion of the competitors unable to complete eight counting rounds. Despite this, Kernaghan's total, averaging a fraction under 40 points per round, would have been hard to beat. Ian McDougall (17) was runner-up with 306 points. Other prizewinners: Bobby Speirs (12) 305, David Bryden (7) 303, Gordon Little (15) 298 and John Stewart (22) 293. The presentation of awards takes place at St Blane's Hotel, Kilchattan Bay on Saturday, April 5 at 1.30pm. John Stewart consolidated his place among the prizewinners last Saturday when he led the final round with 40 points. Gordon Little was second with 39 while John Kernaghan and Duncan Speirs (7) were both on 37. A busy weekend for Kingarth golfers begins tomorrow (Saturday) with an extra medal followed by the Easter medal on Monday. Ballot for both competitions will take place at the clubhouse at 8.30am. The first round of the Sir Harry Hope Cup has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 12.
