THERE was a feeling of déjà vu at Kingarth last Saturday when for the
second successive week Gordon Pettigrew edged Jim McKirdy out of first
place thanks to a better last six holes. Both players finished on
net 62 in the Committee Prizes competition but six-handicapper Pettigrew’s
slightly stronger finish again gave him the honours. Birdies at the
eighth, ninth and fifteenth paved the way to victory and a level-par
gross 68. McKirdy, playing off 10, also had three birdies in his round
of 72, but two dropped shots over the final six holes cost him the top
prize. Other leading scorers were John Stewart (22), John Kernaghan
(13) and Duncan Speirs (7) all on 65.
JOHN KERNAGHAN
has won the Alex Speirs Memorial Cup which goes to the player with the
lowest six scores over a number of selected medal rounds. The 13-handicapper
finished with a tally of 384, three shots clear of runner-up David Bryden
on 387. Bobby Speirs (12) was third on 388 with Gordon Pettigrew (6)
and Leonard Ferguson (18) joint fourth with 389.
A LARGE
field is expected for the St Blane’s Trophy competition tomorrow (Saturday)
at Kingarth. The event, which is sponsored by Janis and David Haig of
St Blane’s Hotel, is being defended by club champion Gordon Pettigrew
who will be bidding for his third victory in as many weeks.
CLUB secretary
Frazer Robinson is urging all winners of silverware last season to return
their trophies to him at 32 Marine Place, Rothesay or to St Blane’s
Hotel, Kilchattan Bay as soon as possible.
