JIM McKIRDY finally shook off his runner-up tag last Saturday as he
lifted the St Blane's Trophy in the 18-hole medal event at Kingarth.
The 10-handicapper, who has had to settle for second place in the
previous two competitions, finished with a flourish when made certain
of victory with a birdie three at the 18th for an excellent gross 73. McKirdy's
net 63 made him the only player in the field to beat the competition
scratch score of 64 and was two clear of his nearest challenger.
Club secretary
Frazer Robinson (20) took over the McKirdy mantle of runner-up with
net 65. An excellent outward half of 40 had set Robinson up for a possible win
but too many dropped shots on the back nine cost him the trophy. Other
leading scorers were A. Francis (20), Gordon Little (16) and David Bryden
(9) all on 66.
As always,
the day was generously sponsored by Janis and David Haig of St Blane's
Hotel, Kilchattan Bay and the presentation of awards will take place
at the hotel tomorrow (Saturday) at 1.30pm.
Earlier a
big turnout is expected to do battle for the Kingarth Trophy, donated
by club patron The Honourable Lord Kingarth, in the stableford event
which was postponed from earlier in the season. The usual ballot takes
place at the clubhouse at 8.30am.
