FORMER club champion Gordon Pettigrew was back in the winners' enclosure last week when he lifted the St Blane's Trophy with a one-shot victory at Kingarth. A seven-foot birdie putt on the 18th green completed a solid performance by seven-handicapper Pettigrew who finished on net 63 after a two-over-par 70. Bobby Speirs (13) was runner-up on 64, with other fine performances from junior Stephen Greenshields (20) 65 and Alistair McFarlane (13) 66. Club captain Ian McDougall expressed thanks to David and Janis Haig, proprietors of St Blane's Hotel, Kilchattan Bay for their continued generosity in providing all the prizes and a goody-bag for every competitor. The presentation of awards takes place at the hotel after tomorrow's medal.

THE final competition of the summer season takes place tomorrow when an extra medal will be the last event in the Alex Speirs Memorial Cup series. David Cameron, who is enjoying a rich vein of form, leads the way with a 385 score from six counting competitions. David Bryden is in second place with 387, while George Cuthbertson (395), Jim McKirdy and John Kernaghan (both 400) are other leading challengers. The trophy, in memory of former greenkeeper Alex Speirs, goes to the player with the six best scores from 12 designated events. The usual ballot takes place at the clubhouse at 8.30am.
