M & M TROPHY
PORT Bannatyne’s Liam Shanks blew the opposition away with a blast that
matched the stormy conditions at windswept Kingarth on Sunday as he
powered his way to a 10-shot victory in the M&M Trophy tournament played
over the three island courses.
The nine-handicapper, who went into the final round with a four-shot
lead after scores of 64 and 62 respectively at his home course and at
Rothesay, increased the margin by six after finishing second equal at
Kingarth with an excellent net 69 in difficult conditions. His
three-round tally of 195 left Jim McKirdy of Bute a distant runner-up on
205.
Shanks mastered the conditions well and produced the only two of the day
when he fired a six-iron downwind to within six feet of the pin at the
213 yards’ par three sixth hole. The victory confirmed the potential
that the 20-year-old showed as a youngster when he won the Junior Open
at Rothesay in 2004. It also followed various club victories at Port
Bannatyne this year including Winter League success with partner Jim
Muldoon.
On Sunday he finished two shots adrift of former Bute GC champion Robert
McKirdy who led the field with net 67 playing off six. John Duncan (7)
of Rothesay and Robert Jardine (12) of Port Bannatyne shared second
place with Shanks on 69.
Rothesay’s Jim McAlister won the overall scratch award after adding a 79
at Kingarth to his previous rounds of 75 and 72 for a 226 total.
Full details of the leading net scores over Port Bannatyne, Rothesay and
Kingarth respectively are as follows: 1 – Liam Shanks (Port) 195 (64,
62, 69); 2 – Jim McKirdy (Bute) 205 (70, 64, 71); 3 – Gordon Whitelaw
(Port) 209 (65, 70, 74); 4 – Graham Fisher (Port) 210 (67, 72, 71); 5 -
John Duncan (Rothesay) 212 (72, 71, 69).
The winner at Port Bannatyne was Alex. Greer Jnr with net 62; Liam
Shanks led at Rothesay also with net 62; while Robert McKirdy won the
Kingarth round with net 67.
